Two new additions and a refurb of the existing Edwardian buildings have brought this school up to modern standards

The architect’s view

On a site with buildings between 35 and 100 years old: one locally listed, one statutorily, the project comprised 40 per cent new build and 60 per cent refurbishment to bring existing buildings up to modern standards while preserving the Edwardian Pankhurst building.

Two new buildings were provided: a new dining pavilion and the Nightingale Building. The existing Pankhurst, Marie Curie and Rosa Parks buildings were
extensively refurbished, with an M&E overhaul, new roofs and replacement windows. Internal layouts were rearranged to provide flexible learning space and particular attention was paid to improving natural light and ventilation.

The new buildings’ materials take their lead from the existing, but use them in a contemporary way, responding to expectations for 21st century learning
environments. The Nightingale Building’s materials are primarily brick, timber and glass. Chosen materials ensure the building fits its context and responds to the need for robust, environmentally sound construction.
