Admiralty House, Kent by Guy Hollaway Architects

Sea views were key in the reconfiguration of this seafront house in Kent

The architect’s view

The project involved reconfiguring the house’s four bedrooms as two in order to meet the brief set by the client; this requested a luxury master bedroom, an en-suite and a dressing area at first-floor level. This was achieved by locating the en-suite in the bedroom facing the sea. The bath and lighting is controlled at the bedside, and the bath is filled by a recessed ceiling-mounted water outlet. The existing windows were enlarged to improve the sea view but, due to overlooking constraints, the amount of glazing was restricted. As it was essential to gain views from both the bath and shower, they were aligned; this provided sea views through the shower from the bath. The shower entrance is on the control side while the exit, where users dry off , is on the other. Sinks on the farthest wall from the windows have full-height mirrors to reflect the view, whereas the roof overhang and slatted timber screen restrict views to the interior.
