​Rogers Stirk Harbour and Aedas complete ‘architectural front door’ into Hong Kong


The transport hub for the new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge has been constructed on a 150ha artificial island 

The Passenger Clearance Building is sited to the north-east of Hong Kong International Airport, near other transport links including the SkyPier Ferry Terminal and subway lines. The 55km-long bridge provides a new entry point into Hong Kong and vastly reduces travelling time between Hong Kong and other Greater Bay Area cities.

The building is designed as a major public transport interchange, with arrival and departure areas for buses and extensive facilities for visitors and residents waiting to gain immigration clearance.

Movement through the building is punctuated with full-height ’canyons’ which allow natural light to penetrate all levels. This provides a constant visual connection to the linear waveform roof – which was prefabricated offsite – with the intention of enhancing clarity, legibility and providing intuitive wayfinding through the building.

I am delighted to have worked on such an innovative project which brings beauty and elegance to the everyday activity of travel. The new crossing will benefit those living and working in the region greatly with enhanced connectivity, as well as highlighting the contextualised sensitive roof form which responds to the undulating mountainous backdrop of such a beautiful local environment.

The bridge is a vital project for the Greater Bay Area in southern China, which includes Hong Kong, Macau and nine mainland cities, and aims to be a powerhouse of innovation and economic growth like San Francisco, New York and Tokyo. This building serves as a beautiful gateway to Hong Kong and we are honoured to have worked on it.

  • Great that the Brits and friends are still involved in the ex Crown Colony! A liberalising influence in tricky times there for democracy? And it looks like a combination of silver grey Chep Lap Kok and the bronze mahogany Kuala Lumpur Airport with it’s tapered concrete columns? Very well judged. Of course I will need a site visit with a weekend stay at the Oriental.

    What’s next for the Venice of the East? A connection to the new road/rail link to Vien and beyond, with a stop at Yangon? Mahjong round a smoking Barbie to deter the mosquitos? A new Kowloon Cricket Club? Russia v China in the T20 final? Croquet is ideal when the humidity is 90%? Will we ever be as fluent in Madarin or Hokkien as Carrie Gracie?

  • This massive 'filter' for people entering Hong Kong from Macau / Zhuhai is matched by a similar facility at the opposite end of the bridge-tunnel, and yet another one out at sea at the transition from bridge to tunnel, and all this might seem like overkill for 'passenger clearance', and very Orwellian - but perhaps, with Brexit, we'll find out for ourselves what's needed.
