Rogers completes Mexican banking tower

  • Comment

The new BBVA Bancomer Tower designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Legorreta + Legorreta has opened in Mexico City

Drawn up and delivered under the collaborative name LegoRogers, the 50-storey tower is the first completed project by the duo. According to the firms the scheme draws on ‘the practice’s different architectural languages’ and ‘common values’.

The 188,777m2 development for the Spanish banking group sits on the edge of the Chapultepec Park and features sky gardens which overlook the green space below.

On the ground floor the tower’s triple-height lobby connects the bank’s daily operations with the commercial business located on the higher levels of the building.

It also features a sky lobby on the twelfth floor which will be used for exhibitions and public events.

The 235m-tall scheme features RSHP’s trademark externally expressed structure while the façade has been inspired by Mexican traditions and architectural heritage.

RSHP founder Richard Rogers, said: ‘The form of this building is based on a rethinking of conventional approaches to office space. The design creates a new hierarchy of vertical communities or ‘villages’ with open areas where staff and visitors can meet and enjoy spectacular views across the city.

‘The highly sustainable design incorporates a façade which draws on the heritage of Mexican architecture; the result is a reinterpretation of the distinctive texture of traditional ‘celosia’ screens. This building successfully reflects the beauty of LegoRogers’ talents.’

Victor Legorreta, director of Legorreta + Legorreta, added: ‘The collaboration started as a friendship between Richard and my father (Ricardo Legorretta), and later I have also become a close friend of Richard. Both RSHP and Legorretta + Legorretta were invited by BBVA Bancomer to enter a competition to design a new headquarter building for them in Mexico City. As Richard had been visiting Mexico for more than 20 years, we had always talked about the possibility of both practices working together, so it was the perfect opportunity to form a team and participate in the competition.’
