The first building completed as part of the Greenwich Peninsula masterplan for Knight Dragon contains 269 residential units designed to form the centre of a new district
The Waterman forms the first completed part of a mixed-tenure development on the east side of the Greenwich Peninsula designed by Pilbrow & Partners for Knight Dragon, which will include a building next to The Waterman (not yet under construction) that will provide a further 261 new homes.
The project is based on an urban typology designed to integrate traditional courtyard blocks with strategically placed tall buildings, with the courtyards providing street spaces and the tall buildings denoting the position of new public squares. The Waterman contains each of the masterplan’s elements including a new public space, low-rise perimeter courtyard and tower.

A six-storey low-rise building creates street façades at the perimeter of the block and a private internal garden for residents. Two-storey townhouses run along the base of the building, intended to read as a stone plinth to the tower. The top floor is recessed as an attic, facing the coal loader jetty on the River Thames, and contains four cantilevered penthouses.
The tower building is arranged as two wings flanking the central core. Each wing contains three flats with every apartment having a dual aspect. L-shaped living rooms are set around corner balconies, with the upper-most floors served by a communal residential garden.

As our first completed new-build project, The Waterman is a well-considered urban and architectural design proposition. Its high standard of detail reflects the commitment of our team to working closely with a great client and contractor. For us, it is also a statement of our ambition to address the challenge of building sustainable neighbourhoods which integrate disparate housing tenures into a single community.
