Moxon completes CLT expansion for Cairngorms National Park Authority HQ

The 405m² project in the Highlands provides a new public face to a 19th-century building in the Scottish Highlands

Moxon Architects has completed the expansion and reconfiguration of the headquarters of the Cairngorms National Park Authority in Grantown-on-Spey. The L-shaped extension consists of a cross-laminated timber structure clad in natural European Larch, as well as pleated zinc and frameless glazing.

As well as the new entrance the project provides a new wing of open plan office space, which can be reconfigured with movable timber-clad screens, as well as formal and informal meeting spaces, and breakout zones.

Collaborating closely with the Highland Council through the planning process, Moxon has aimed to create a contemporary design in a conservation area which rethinks how the Authority operates and interacts with the public. The material palette and massing are designed to complement the existing fabric of the Highlands town and open the HQ on to the adjacent public square.

The layout and orientation of the project optimise solar gain and enhance the ecology of the site, with the inclusion of a wild garden, wildlife boxes and a planted roof.

Architect’s view

Our guiding principle was to create an innovative addition to the CNPA’s historic headquarters, offering an inviting new public entrance and offices for staff. The building finds a place within the townscape hierarchy suitable for the headquarters of the National Park, whilst the carefully selected materials will weather over time, setting the building into its context.

  • It is great to see all fixtures being fully integrated into CLT slabs/ceilings.

  • And it'll be interesting to see how the horizontal joints in the boarded larch cladding weather.
