Morris + Company has completed the Wildernesse Estate mews near Sevenoaks for PegasusLife. Further elements of the retirement community include an onsite restaurant and a retrofit of the Grade II-listed ‘main’ house by Purcell, which is also adding a communal lounge and spa.

The mews homes are defined by a material palette of brick, reconstituted stone and timber. The scheme’s architecture is designed to create a visual connection with its historic context and woodland surroundings, with its banding of materials, and pitched and hipped slate roofs.
The homes are characterised by large timber windows intended to create a relationship with the landscape, while blinds and internal, louvred timber shutters provide privacy and shelter from the sun. Private and semi-private outdoor amenity spaces aim to balance privacy with a sense of community and neighbourliness.

The quality and nature of the built form and surrounding landscape make it ideal for its intended retirement community use. The central idea is that everyone, irrespective of age, shares the aspiration to live in a beautiful and socially inclusive environment. The creation of caring, safe and secure environments, which promote healthy living and wellbeing, lies at the heart of these plans.
To succeed in delivering a holistic, socially inclusive environment it was key to create durable dwellings, sustainable in their longevity, while satisfying all relevant standards. The external envelope for the mews had to appeal to an audience who will attach importance to quality, heritage and physical as well as emotional security. The large timber windows are intended to sit deep in the brick reveals to manifest a protective steadiness. The warm and tactile surface of the joinery elements to these areas has a comfortable and domestic aesthetic. In contrast, the flush detailing to lintels and sills as well as recessed rainwater gutters and pipes will preserve a tidy appearance to the mews houses.
The materiality of the mews houses is expressed in the use of brick and reconstituted stone rather than Kentish Ragstone. However, they adopt and interpret several features of the Grade II-listed house nearby, including the staggered arrangement of the mews houses, cascading down the slope.
