Manchester charity HQ transformed by OMI Architects

  • Comment

£1.65 million was raised to fund a new headquarters for the Mustard Tree charity, which supports homeless and marginalised people

The Mustard Tree is a Manchester-based charitable trust established in 1994 which helps people trapped in poverty or homelessness to gain skills and self-confidence.

Their headquarters on Oldham Road was in need of a significant update in order to meet the needs and future aspirations of the charity. OMI’s scheme consists of a series of bold interventions that focus on how people enter and circulate around the building. From the entrance lobby visitors can directly access the shop, a large flexible ground-floor room, first-floor break-out space, offices and art/performance space.

Alongside this there was a general reworking and upgrading of the existing accommodation throughout the building.

Architect’s view

This project is close to our hearts. Mayor Andy Burnham’s pledge to end homelessness in Manchester demands a multi-faceted approach. The Mustard Tree has been leading the way in providing practical support and training for the last 24 years. Our work on the building has helped create high-quality spaces and facilities which will expand the support on offer for Manchester’s most vulnerable citizens.
