Klassnik Corporation unwraps Cambridge football club project

London-based Klassnik Corporation has completed the transformation of the supporters club at Cambridge United FC

BEFORE • PROJECT DATA • ELEVATIONS

The practice was commissioned to bring an inspiring and transformational piece of public art to the football club’s rundown supporters club.

Located behind the north stand of the proposed Cambridge Community Stadium development, the plan was to produce a space that could evolve and encourage interaction beyond match day fans.

The site had previously been home to a low rise block with a cheap smoking shelter and a car wash.

Inspired by American Freeway buildings and the BEST Products Stores of the seventies, Klassnik conceived a supergraphic cedar rainscreen which forms a skin over the existing building.

This cladding conceals half of the old building while leaving the other half exposed and a graphic ‘swoosh’ extends from 3m above the existing roof line.

  • A good swoosh, inspired low cost cosmetics, but supergraphics? - and I wonder if James Wines would've come up with something even more eye-catching?

  • Simple, clean, and contemporary. This project breathes fresh life into an otherwise tired building, and all on a low budget.
