Karakusevic Carson completes first phase of Camden housing

Karakusevic Carson has revealed its £18 million Camden estate regeneration scheme

PROJECT DATA • PLANS

The 7,360m2 project is the first phase of the borough’s regeneration of its Bacton Estate.

The practice has designed 44 homes for social rent on a narrow, triangular estate to the north east of the existing 1960s estate.

The scheme features a mix of four-storey townhouses and stacked maisonettes arranged around a central courtyard. A further five-storey apartment block provides 22 individual apartments.

A further phase due for completion towards the end of the year includes a larger apartment block for market sale and two affordable townhouses.

The housing is constructed from cross-laminated timber and clad in a varied palette of five different types of brickwork.

Paul Karakusevic, partner at Karakusevic Carson Architects, said: ‘Delivering the first phase of the Bacton Estate re-housing programme over the past 3 years has helped transform many residents’ lives. The first phase of the 44 social rent properties arranged around a courtyard garden and playground retain the spirit of a tight knit community.

‘This project is a unique council and resident led process putting design quality and specification at the fore and helps enable the wider re-building programme. We have worked closely with both the residents and the council to build a scheme of which both can be proud.’
