Flanagan Lawrence and Doone Silver complete London office scheme

  • Comment

Doone Silver and AJ120 practice Flanagan Lawrence have completed this 13,650m² office scheme in the City of London

The project was originally designed under the banner of the later-rebranded Bogle Flanagan Lawrence Silver (BFLS), the practice first revealing plans for the ’rotating, stepped fan-shaped’ scheme in 2010.

The development was subsequently delivered by BFLS’ successor Flanagan Lawrence in collaboration with ‘design architect’ Doone Silver Architects - the London-based firm headed by Richard Doone and former BFLS director John Silver.

The 15-storey office scheme sits on a triangular site bounded by Fetter Lane and New Fetter Lane. The block steps up from the low-rise buildings of the Chancery Lane Conservation Area towards the taller commercial buildings of the nearby New Street Square.

The development replaces two lower 1950s buildings and a car park and boasts a series of cascading double-storey stepped terraces.

The ground floor has been set back and includes a full height glazed lobby alongside new shop units.

Featuring an envelope almost entirely made of class, the core of the building is clad in pale grey opaque glass vertical panels while the glazing to the offices has a multi-faceted and reticulated surface.

Silver, design director at Doone Silver Architects, said: ‘The stepped form, rotating through the triangular site around a slender stair tower, provides a dynamic response to the building’s urban context and unlocks highly versatile open floorplates. It has been a fantastic experience to work so closely with Great Portland Estates and the entire team to design and deliver this unique building.’

David Lawrence of Flanagan Lawrence, added: ‘This is an elegant building where a refined attention to detail permeates the whole design. Everyone involved in the design and delivery of this project can be justifiably proud.’
