First look at Capita's Blackburn bus station

Capita has completed this new bus station on the site of a former market in Blackburn town centre

PROJECT DATA • PLANS

The 1,127m2 station, which forms part of the Pennine Reach rapid bus transport scheme, includes a tourist information centre, welfare facilities and flexible spaces which can be used for community events.

Designed as a lightweight canopy and with an original budget of £4 million, the building’s roof oversails the concourse and glazed slots within it allow daylight into the space below.

The 90m-long building is supported by six ‘sculptural loops’ which the practice said have been ‘inspired by cotton weaving looms’.
