Feline functionalism: Gort Scott completes London Cat Clinic

  • Comment

A specialist feline veterinary practice in Bermondsey, London, has been finished in a spare, contemporary aesthetic

The London Cat Clinic, designed by Gort Scott, offers a wide range of facilities, including a full operating theatre and lab, as well as a range of diagnostic imaging methods. The site is in an area which has been significantly redeveloped and regenerated as part of Southwark’s Bermondsey Spa masterplan. In this, the clinic occupies an existing shell and core commercial unit.

The careful planning of the space reflects the innovative approach to veterinary medicine at the clinic and helps maximise the potential of the modestly sized unit. The glazed internal screens and translucent polycarbonate panels used as dividers in the space, enable light to be brought deep into the floor plan, providing hints of activity visible from the public-facing areas.

Colour is used boldly throughout, to reinforce the new company’s identity and highlights key features of the design. In the reception area, decorative timber and white laminate panels are applied to blue painted walls, while specially commissioned birch plywood joinery sub-divides the space. The design is intended to set cats and their owners at their ease – and includes elements like the integrated ‘cubbies’ into which cats can climb.

Architect’s view

The London Cat Clinic is the second specialist cat clinic that we have designed for an independent practitioner with very different values from the large chain and franchise vet practices. This is a new vet practice, which has the experience and the welfare of the animal and its owner at heart. This was an important driver for the design, informing the appearance and the sequence of spaces. It is great to see independent businesses such as the London Cat Clinic reinvigorating this exciting bit of Bermondsey.
