Design Engine completes Hubert Perrodo Building for University of Oxford

This ceramic and metal-clad building provides new public and teaching spaces to complete the transformation of St Peter’s College

The four-storey Hubert Perrodo Building designed by Design Engine marks the completion of phase two of the Perrodo Project at St Peter’s College, Oxford University, named after the Perrodo family whose donation made the work possible. 

It comprises of six study bedrooms, a seminar room, and a ground-floor study and event space within the remodeled Hannington and Chavasse Quads. As part of the project, three seminar spaces were also refurbished in the neighbouring listed Chavasse Building.

The new building takes the form of a three-storey pavilion with a set-back fourth storey, matching in height the existing buildings that surround the landscaped Chavasse Quad. A screen of vertical ceramic rods constitutes the primary façade and makes reference to the stone tracery evident in a number of existing buildings on site. The ceramic has a natural finish chosen to match the texture and tone of the  stone, and is layered in front of bronze-coloured metal cladding chosen to match the colour of the existing brick buildings. This applied ceramic ’veil’ is designed to unify the exterior and give coherence to the different levels and uses.

Architect’s view

Unifying the complexity of the brief within this historic but tight site was an exciting challenge. Working closely with the local planning authorities we were able to satisfy the planning demands of this beautiful city while maximising the potential of the site. As the completion of the final elevation to the relandscaped quad, the new building needed a presence of its own while respecting its (listed) neighbours. We hope we have designed a building which is contemporary in nature but achieves the same richness of façade evident in the surrounding quad, which will continue the tradition of quality architecture within St Peter’s College.
