Associated Architects completes gateway to Birmingham City University

  • Comment

Associated Architects has completed the second phase of Birmingham City University’s Curzon Street campus

ARCHITECT’S VIEW • PROJECT DATA

The £46.2million building, which sits on the eastern axis of Patel Taylor’s Eastside City Park, has been designed to act as a gateway to the campus.

The 23,238m2 scheme acts as a student hub and includes a central library, student services, students’ union, and cafes and restaurants.

It also provides additional teaching space for the university’s education, law and social science, and business school departments.

The practice has also recently been granted planning for the next phase of work at the university which is set to start in Spring 2016.

Architect’s view

The building has a clear University imprint; designed to be open and transparent to share its life with the adjacent park and streets. It is conceived as two wings of accommodation with six storeys on Curzon Street and five storeys following Cardigan Street, linked by an atrium on the axis of the ‘promenade’ running along the north of the park. Materials provide a modern update on the heritage of the area and echo those used elsewhere on the University estate, using render and brickwork with feature terracotta coloured fins to provide solar shading.
