[FIRST LOOK] Arup Associates has revealed images of its recently completed turbine at the £130 million BSkyB headquarters
The centre itself, which sits at the herart of Sky’s headquarters in Osterley, west London, was completed back in 2010.
Formed from a tapered and twisting prismatic truss, the turbine stands 60m tall and has the capacity to generate 100kW of energy at peak times.
The twists of the tower’ form have been used to direct the wind towards the turbine’s blades.
Clad with perforated anodised aluminium panels, some wind is allowed to pass through the tower, whilst sun is reflected creating an ‘ever changing play of light and shade’.
The turbine represents a breakthrough in the way in which wind turbines close to airport runways are dealt with. Being in close proximity Heathrow airport an agreement had to be met with Heathrow and air traffic control to allow radar blanking of the turbine.
