Copenhagen president resigns

The president of the UN climate change summit in Copenhagen, Connie Hedegaard, has stepped down from her post

The Danish minister, who has been in charge of the summit since talks began nine days ago, has stepped aside leaving discussions in deadlock. As president, she has been widely criticised by representatives of poor nations for favouring rich countries, as the negotiations between the groups continue over emission cuts and financial aid.

Hedegaard, who has been Denmark’s climate minister since 2004, has described the move as ‘procedural’, claiming: ‘With so many heads of state and government having arrived it’s appropriate that the Prime Minister of Denmark presides’.

She will be replaced by Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke. Hedegaard will take on the role of Special representative to Rasmussen for the remainder of the summit.
