[First look + plans + project data] Architype’s BREEAM ‘Excellent’ Cwm Ifor Primary School, in Caerphilly, has opened its doors
The sustainability specialist-practice, in partnership with Caerphilly County Borough Council Building Consultancy, designed the new build one-and-a-half form entry school as part of Wales’ 21st Century Schools building programme.
The timber-framed building is arranged around a central open plan entrance foyer, dining room, café and performance social space which connects to an adjacent hall. Around the central space there are four wings which accommodate foundation, infant, junior and staff administration facilities.
Compared to the traditional school arrangement with classrooms placed off corridors the scheme ‘adopts a smaller class size with shared hub spaces, breakout spaces, outdoors classrooms, inhabitable walls and nooks for various learner directed activities with small groups and one-to-one sessions.’
The school’s green roofs, natural lighting, natural ventilation, use of off-site timber closed-panel construction, untreated UK timber cladding, high levels of insulation and roof membrane with an integrated photovoltaic system, will enable it to achieve a rating of BREEAM ‘Excellent’.
