This year’s AJ100 Client of the Year award has been handed to Plymouth College of Art & Plymouth School of the Creative Arts
The entry for the prestigious accolade, which has previously been won by Argent and Olympic Delivery Authority, was submitted by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBS).
The practice first started working for the college in 2011 by undertaking a full masterplan for the college’s city centre site, which involved developing a long-term vision for arts education in Plymouth.
Through masterplanning discussions with the principal, Andrew Brewerton, a clear vision developed to create a groundbreaking ‘continuum’ of arts education in the city. It was through this process that the idea of the School of the Creative Arts was born.
The practice wrote: ‘It is through Brewerton’s clarity of vision, belief and trust in FCBS being able to distil and represent this into the new building overlaid with head teacher Dave Strudwick’s alternative vision of creative open plan teaching in a studio atmosphere that the new building became reality.
The impact of the school on the local community, who have adopted it as the new heart of Millbay, the fact it is visible from out in Plymouth Sound as the beacon of regeneration in Millbay and the reality of the spectacular impact on the students and their learning progression are the reasons why FCBS put forward Brewerton and Strudwick as best clients of the year 2015.
They have managed to completely turn around this trend and provide a fantastic educational resource for Plymouth across all ages which is increasingly becoming known nationally and internationally as an exemplar of creative education.’
