Salaries across the board have recovered to pre-downturn levels but for most that still means a decline in real terms

Senior-level staff have again seen their pay packets swell, with the median salaries for partners and directors rising for a second year in a row.

The average wage for those at the top has increased to £85,000, finally passing the pre-crisis peak of £84,000. A quarter of AJ100 practices say they pay their partners at least £100,000 and, unsurprisingly, most of these are based in London. One firm claims to pay its directors an average of £247,000.

Associates’ earnings are up, too, having been stagnant at £50,000 last year, while both Part 3 and year-out students have, on average, seen their pay rise to £29,000 and £21,000 respectively. However, the jobbing architect is not faring so well, with no movement in wages this year. Compared with the Consumer Price Index, salaries for the majority of architects are, in effect, declining.

John Assael of Assael Architecture says: ‘The salary levels have been static or declining in real terms for most of this period and the modest improvements this year are just not enough.

‘We are now seriously falling behind salary levels of other professionals, such as doctors and solicitors.’
