Robert Adam is a legendary figure in the world of new classical architecture and I wish him all the best in his retirement. No one has done more to promote tolerance of traditional design in an often hostile profession. I do hope he continues to campaign, as I am sure he will.
I am very touched you remember that, I made myself quite unpopular with a few classicists at the time. Now I am chairman of the Traditional Architecture Group hopefully things will be a little different, less aggressive and more nuanced. I like diversity in architecture - good modernism is certainly far better than bad classicism.
I am so pleased that beauty is finally being talked about as an independent issue. For too long architects have believed that beauty is a consequence of function, which it clearly is not - look around! Also the emphasis on building to please the general public rather than only architects is a real step forward.
I wish Hopkins all the best for this exciting and challenging project
I think architects are unfair on Nicholas Boys Smith, he uses big data to understand pressing architectural and social issues which are often ignored by the profession. If the architectural establishment is troubled by his findings, then that can only be a good thing.
Violet-le-Duc was one of the greatest architects of his time, a French Pugin. Just rebuild the tower as it was, haven’t the Parisians suffered enough!
Is it morally wrong to enjoy decoration? What kind of Orwellian nightmare are we living in?
It’s a great loss, architects need outspoken critics to puncture their often overinflated egos. He wasn’t very nice about my work but it didn’t bother me.
