Evan Davies?? He's barely made a contribution to broadcasting let alone architecture...
Interesting to compare to the similar recent scheme at the V&A, with the Levete courtyard. Have to say on paper (screen) this appears the better of the two.
On even a fleeting examination of the Island recently, compared to a dozen years ago when I knew it far better, it's hard to believe ANY planning controls are being applied. It's ironic that the LDDC saw far less built, and rather sad in a way to see the very earliest generation of buildings there used as sales pavilions for their replacements. On the other hand, the trees planted thirty years ago are far more mature and often obscure much of that era.
These will if built hardly improve housing supply where it's needed, Paul
Cute though the existing building is - and I must admit I had no idea it has two stories, loos, kitchen and lifts - it's hard to defend the proposal in the new context of 5 Broadgate.
"a 54m³ office block" A what??
"Architecture squad; you're busted. Put down the mouse and step away from the Autocad. Take her away."
"The taller and more imposing stone-clad volume blends with the rhythm of Waterloo Road while making a strong visual statement." That's one way of putting it. Another is that the stone façade does little to improve the corner and certainly ignores the brick fire station. Oh, and the Old Vic is about 50 yards away across the road.
