[Working detail 01.09.11] Courtyard glazing and roof verge for homeless hostel

The project’s key spatial move was to wrap a single-storey extension around the backyard of the existing hostel. To reduce the impact of the massing along the street elevation and on the neighbouring properties, the boundary elevations were kept at the height of the garden walls.

Within the courtyard, the elevations were dictated by the levels of the existing building; floor-to-ceiling glazing was wrapped around the four facades, with a continuous band of white render on top. The height difference between the courtyard and the boundary created a steeply sloping roof and ceiling soffit with varying pitch.

The white render and sedum roof were selected because of practical and aesthetic considerations. The band of white render bounces light around the courtyard and into the bedrooms while the sloping sedum roofs improve neighbours’ views.

The challenge was to find a sedum roof product that could be installed at such steep angles. We worked closely with the contractor and the green roof manufacturer to find a technical solution, which involved additional supports to prevent the sedum blanket slipping. We also introduced a light irrigation system to ensure the sedum blanket would not dry out.
