Velodrome minds thinking alike

From Amsterdam Astragal has received an email from one Stephen Lawrence, RIBA, praising Hopkins’ design for the 2012 Olympic Velodrome

It seems he had come up with an uncannily similar proposal featuring a Pringle-like roof more than a decade ago.

Unsurprisingly, Lawrence is a fan of the Hopkins scheme: ‘I have to say that it is far and away the best building on the site – of course my proposal was that this would be the main stadium and not just the Velodrome – what a shame and what a missed opportunity.’

Lawrence attached a sketch of his proposal for ‘a major project at Stratford in East London’, dated January, 2000, which Astragal reproduces here so readers can draw their own conclusions about the similarities. It’s easy, of course, to predict Hopkins’ response to all this: ‘On yer bike!’
