Putting on the Glitz at the Whitworth Art Gallery

A wall-to-wall feast for the eyes showcasing wallpaper from 18th century to the 1970’s

This display showcases wallpaper fashions for decadent, glitzy prints and materials traced back from the swinging sixties and seventies to the 18th century, as well as featuring new designs built on this trend. It also describes how expensive materials like precious metal foils and leaf were integrated in the manufacturing process.

It also relates how wallpaper used to be both aspirational and a status symbol, with only the wealthy able to afford luxuries such as wall coverings. The mundane is taken to the sublime with samples from the Whitworth’s collection including 18th-century embossed leather and 19th-century Japanese and French copies.
