Cardiff University, Welsh School of Architecture; MSc Theory and Practice of Sustainable Design

Distinctive feature: Focus on sustainability in global/local contexts and accross social, environmental and economic bounderies. Prepares students for design, procurement and construction. Builds on Environmental Design of Buildings course. The global dimension of sustainability and learning makes the course relevant internationally. It values and builds upon the perspectives of participants from different cultures.

Director comment: Through the application of academic learning within a “live” design project, the masters is unique in enabling students to explore their profession’s role in the delivery of sustainability within a real project environment. A key aspect of this is opportunity to develop new ways of working in a multidisciplinary manner, a change crucial to the delivery of holistically sustainable solutions in the built environment.

Career opportunities: Course helps in career advances, as well enabling change in direction. Many students already have employment, and return with a new perspective.

Entry requirements:
- Good first degree
- Supporting personal statement outlining reasons for wanting to study the subject of the course for which they are applying. This statement should make clear why the subject is important to them, what experience or education they are bringing to the course, what they hope to get from the course, and what ultimate career plans they may have
