Distinctive feature: Principles and application of computational modelling and simulation to design and performance evaluation. Course draws on ongoing research into modelling tools which help deliver high performance buildings. Emphasis on design options rather than compliance. As a member of the school’s Masters suite, students benefit from learning alongside colleagues from many disciplines.

Director comment: Access to advanced simulation tools does not guarantee quality; it is still easy to produce incorrect, misleading, and potentially damaging results. Development of critical awareness on the limitations, as well as the advantages, of the methods studied is the cornerstone of our approach.

Career opportunities: Most students return to their professional base as subject specialists from within. There is a need in building design professions for specialists able to work with, and fully understand output from, software for assessing environmental performance.

- Supporting personal statement outlining reasons for wanting to study the subject of the course for which they are applying. This statement should make clear why the subject is important to them, what experience or education they are bringing to the course, what they hope to get from the course, and what ultimate career plans they may have
