Distinct feature: The programme is taught in a School with a world class reputation for research and an ethos that is committed to live design projects. These broader influences are combined on the MSc Sustainable Architecture Studies (MSc SAS) to provide a holistic understanding of sustainable architecture. Students can choose between two technical tracks: either specialising in computational design and parametric modelling, or in low impact materials.

Director comment: The programme attracts students from a wide range of countries. In 2011-2012 there were students on the MSc SAS from: Peru, Russia, Spain, Greece, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Iran, China, USA, UK, South Korea, Nigeria and Japan. This creates a diverse teaching environment where issues relating to sustainable architecture are explored in response to a variety of contexts. The live design studio is core to the programme and challenges students to apply theories of sustainable design to real-life situations.

Student comment: “When I started the course, I didn’t know much about sustainability. The course allowed me to choose my own way, deciding which aspects I wanted to focus more. Doing live projects is also great, it gives you the chance to interact with people in real life situations, highlighting the social spirit of architecture. The lecturers and professors are top level experts whose expertise is at your disposal during the course as well as to undertake further research. Everyone is very friendly and easy to access.” - Asier Aurrekoetxea Etxebarria MSc SAS sudent, 2011-12

Career Opportunities: A number of graduates of the MSc SAS choose to remain at the University of Sheffield for their PhD; others pursue careers in research or enter professional practice with specialist knowledge of sustainable architecture.
