The Bartlett, University College London; MSc Environmental Design and Engineering
Course focus: Technical-Building Performance Modelling || Design studio: YES || Fees: £6385/£15205 (EU/Overseas)
Course director: Ben Croxford
Course founded: 1977
Duration: 1 year full-time; 2-5 years part-time
Intake: 40 full-time
Student profile: Around one third architects
Distinctive features: Course provides an interdisciplinary approach to all environmental issues associated with building design, including energy, health and comfort, ventilation, solar design and building simulation software. Based in central London, the Bartlett has very good access to local engineering consultancies and architecture practices. This means there is a good synergy between experienced professionals and students about what is happening in current practice, with roughly twenty external lecturers per year. Also, the Bartlett has a very active research group in this area.
Director’s comments: The course attracts a huge number of applicants and we are fortunate to be able to select high quality students. We try to make sure the course is fun with a residential trip early in the year and regular evening events. We expect at least 10 per cent of the cohort to get distinctions, with most students gaining a high pass (around mid B). Those in line for distinctions are extremely likely to find employment before the end of the course even in the recent tough years.
Student comment: It’s a really great course and totally exceeded my expectations
Career opportunities: Most large engineering consultancies in London have at least one of our graduates. Some go into architectural practices in London though the number of these has been declining in the last few years. We also employ a few within the department, often as researchers or taken as a PhD candidate, with opportunities to become a lecturer.
