Mark Chalmers reviews the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture’s end of year show
Scotland’s most northerly school ploughs its own furrow once again this year, exemplified by the ‘big crit’: a public event featuring guest critics which rounded off the session. The school’s output swings between diagrammatic rationalism slotted into Aberdeen’s granite townscape, and some rather romantic form-making using traditional materials, such as brick and timber.
Standout unit The work of Unit Two, 21st-Century Settlement, is driven by the process of design. Its tagline is the ‘challenge of the ordinary’, although many of the briefs for schemes within a new settlement for 100,000 people in the east end of Glasgow are far from mundane. Interestingly, many of the ink renderings are influenced by Paul Rudolph’s work and that of unit master Alan Dunlop, with some trademark sectional perspectives in evidence.
Standout students The tectonics of Emma Gibb’s ‘Boat Builders’ Workshop’, set on the Cuningar Loop in the river Clyde. She uses timber cladding and diagrid-framed vessels to create a deft architecture by analogy. By contrast, Andrea Rincón conceived a ‘Black Box Cinema’ for a neighbouring site, which is more a study in massing and internal planning, with its focus on architecture as event.
