Student shows 2013: Liverpool School of Art and Design, Liverpool John Moores University

Matthew Ashton reviews Liverpool School of Art and Design’s end of year show

Liverpool John Moores BA and MArch programmes are delivered within a broader art and design academy, with creative disciplines such as fine art, graphics and product design occupying space within a vast, linear building designed by Rick Mather.

Standout studios/students The BA show is divided into five thematic studios. This approach yields a breadth of proposals, the most interesting being those of the ‘Earth Conversations’ studio, led by tutor Gladys Masey-Martinez. A highly diverse set of responses is offered to broad questions of change in social, economic and ecological contexts. The work of Hugh Haran is noteworthy; his recovered landscape in China’s Hubei province offers a contemplative moment amid the rising tide of the Yangtze. The MArch studio pursues a collective masterplanning enquiry into the Manchester Ship Canal, before diverging into individual projects. Subversive proposals by Catherine Traynor, Mark Flynn and Robbie Gibson offer new perspectives for social engagement in Eccles; their scheme has a live dimension in their continuing work as the RAAD collective.
