Student shows 2013: Arts University Bournemouth

Alan Keane reviews Arts University Bournemouth’s end of year show

The final year of the undergraduate degree begins with a special unit in which students focus on the intersection between architecture and art. The range of ideas includes an animated short film, a performative presentation of mixology and software for reinterpreting the three-dimensionality of musical composition. Often these projects influence the final project. The brief for the level 6 Extended Major Project tackles the controversial former IMAX site in the centre of Bournemouth and its car park. It is deliberately loose in its requirement for a building type. Students were asked to speculate on a hybrid form that contained an element of temporary accommodation. The outcomes are diverse: a balloon walk linking Bournemouth pier and Boscombe pier, art galleries, spa retreats and a visionary tower for the propagation of food stuffs and research into vertical farming.

Standout students Abdul Hasnath’s ‘Concrete: reBOURNE’ is the stand-out project for its simplicity and lines. Emily Moult and Reuban Naran were joint winners of the Terence and Annette O’Rourke Undergraduate Prize; Henriette Backer won the Course Prize; Abbey Kelsey was awarded the Dean’s Prize, and the RIBA Wessex Prize 2013 went to Michael Lane.
