Bartlett students display work at Zaha designed Roca London Gallery

The school’s MArch students have teamed up with the Roca London Gallery to put on their end of year show

The Bartlett’s MArch unit entitled Unit22 Zoetropes: Bartlett Architecture Dares to Care explores how the protection of vulnerable realties can be a task for contemporary architecture.

Led by Izaskun Chinchilla and Carlos Jimenez Cenamor, the work of the unit aims to create playful architecture focusing on improving everyday life, empowering user and communities, and enriching and protecting the environment.

Student projects focus on social environmental sustainability, considering the daily actions of those belonging to vulnerable communities.

The designs have been executed through the use of zoetropes, demonstrating the illusion of motion through the rapid succession of static pictures. Each Zoetrope depicts the daily actions of an individual belonging to a vulnerable community.

By designing for everyday tasks, including getting dressed, bathing and cooking, students have been forced to consider the role the built environment plays in protecting or helping them, rather than focusing purely on aesthetics.

Izaskun Chinchilla said: ‘By designing for the everyday tasks, including getting dressed, bathing and cooking, students have been encouraged to consider the role the built environment plays in protecting or helping the individual, rather than focusing purely on aesthetic.’

The exhibition continues at the Roca London Gallery until the 18 December.
