Student Shows 2012: Sheffield School of Architecture

You would be forgiven for thinking Sheffield School of Architecture has it all: a great view, light and airy studios, and a paternoster lift. The show certainly made the most of the newly refurbished arts tower. Work was shown on two levels; undergraduate upstairs on the mezzanine, and MArch below.

Projects ranged from a crematorium to a building aiming to mediate between the press and the public.

As ever there was a strong focus on live projects with students carrying out many in the local community, including building with pallets, a scout hut, and increasing links with Ecclesall Woods.

The school has an obvious focus on hand drawing and artistic interpretation, and this is a delight to see.

What is the standout unit

Studio One of the MArch entitled ‘Cinema and the City’. Work was based around four main themes: death, water and performance, archaeology, and socio-political traditions. This created some interesting and varied work.

Who are the standout students

Daniel Anderson Hall of the MArch Studio One stood out for the impeccable attention to detail in his hand drawings.

The undergraduate to watch out for has to be Ross Jordan, winner of the school’s Stephen Welsh Prize in Draftmanship, who has created fantastically atmospheric drawings.
