Architect sought for Cyfarthfa Castle overhaul

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is seeking an architect for the first phase of Cyfarthfa Castle’s ‘comprehensive restoration and redevelopment’

The project will create a new enterprise and education centre within the northwest range of the Grade I-listed building.

The iconic landmark – surrounded by 64 hectares of parkland – was built in 1826 for the Crawshay family which owned the nearby Cyfarthfa Ironworks.

Constructed from locally quarried stone, Cyfarthfa Castle is thought to be the most imposing and best preserved ironmaster’s house in Wales.

The building was sold to the local council in 1908 and is now home to a high school and the Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery

The first phase of the redevelopment will create a new enterprise centre featuring offices for creative industries and not-for-profit organisations inside a former wing of the school.

A ground floor education centre and collections store for the museum are also planned. The project’s second phase will focus on regenerating the museum itself.

The council is seeking a multi-disciplinary design team featuring an architect, quantity surveyor, M&E engineer, structural engineer and CDM consultant for the £250,000 contract.

The winning team will develop plans up to RIBA Stage 3 in support of a second-round application to the Heritage Lottery Fund planned for June 2015.

Applicants must have experience working with cultural organisations and on historic Grade I and Grade II*-listed buildings. A track record of working on publicly funded schemes is also required.

The deadline for requests to participate is 17 June.
