Stirling Prize odds: Late money goes on Olympic Stadium but bookies favour Hepworth

Populous’ Olympic Stadium has emerged as the punters’ last-minute frontrunner to win the Stirling Prize, according to bookmaker William Hill

In the run up to tomorrow night’s award ceremony (12 October) the turf accountant reported a stream of wagers on the London 2012 centrepiece.

However, despite the surge in support for the stadium, the bookies’ odds have not changed with David Chipperfield’s Hepworth remaining the 3/1 favourite.

Rupert Adams of William Hill said: ‘The Olympic Stadium has been the best backed building in the last few days but we are convinced this is patriotic money.

‘Anything to do with London 2012 appears to be golden at the moment, but we don’t believe the building is substantial enough to win the Stirling Prize.’

He added that the bets were ‘pretty balanced overall’ with some large sums going on Chipperfield’s Hepworth gallery early doors.

Bookmakers could however suffer if an outsider wins. Last year, the bookies laughed all the way to the bank after the surprise Stirling Prize win for Zaha Hadid’s Evelyn Grace Academy.

The 2012 RIBA Stirling Prize odds (12 Oct)

  • 3/1 - The Hepworth Wakefield by David Chipperfield
  • 7/2 - Sainsbury Laboratory by Stanton Williams
  • 4/1 - The Lyric Theatre by O’Donnell + Tuomey
  • 4/1 - New Court by OMA
  • 9/2 - Maggie’s Centre by OMA
  • 5/1 - London Olympic Stadium by Populous
