Working Detail: The Workshop Studio and Office by DRDH Architects

[WORKING DETAIL 27.08.09] Roller shutter detail

The Workshop Studio and Office − We were asked to incorporate roller shutters on the ground floor, but we were keen to conceal them. The thick layer of insulated render in which we wrapped the existing building gave us a facade that was deep enough for the shutters to sit behind the windows, with the boxes concealed above the first-floor slab behind an opaque glass panel.

This also allowed us to re-scale the previously dull elevations. The building now reads more like a single-storey building with an attic floor, its openings more appropriately scaled to the adjacent villas.

Richard Marks, associate architect, DRDH Architects
