West Hampstead Thameslink Station

Landolt + Brown

The architect’s view

This new station for Network Rail Thameslink incorporates new ticketing, gateline and staff facilities, and is approached through a new linear public space formed by leveling a steeply sloping railway embankment and incorporating an avenue of mature lime trees. The station building comprises a steel framed, glazed envelope with a standing seam steel roof, constructed above a major new retaining wall structure built alongside the rail lines. This retaining wall also forms a key component in the new open space and is lined on its public face, with distinctive saw tooth profile, glazed bricks with graduating green colours reflecting the foliage of the lime trees above. The full length of the wall is illuminated from its parapet at night. The public space is paved in permeable reconstituted stone units, allowing for irrigation and air permeability for the tree roots, with granite kerb detailing.
