Hopkin’s BREEAM Excellent cancer facility hopes to use the functional design of the building to enhance treatment

The architect’s view

Located on a tight urban site with strict height restrictions in central London, Hopkins Architects’ UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre is the fi rst ambulatory care cancer facility in the UK and represents a dramatic step forward in care for people with cancer. It houses the country’s first PET scan and magnetic resonance imaging facilities for clinical research and trials, as well as the Cancer Risk Management Centre, the first of its kind in the UK.

The project redefines the patient experience by allowing the aesthetic and functional design of the building to complement and enhance treatments, wellbeing, rehabilitation and cancer survivorship. A key aspiration, underpinning the design of the whole centre, was to create a sustainability benchmark for future hospital environments in Britain. The hospital is one of the first to achieve the coveted BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
