Secure by Design launches toolkit for commercial buildings

The UK Police initiative Secured by Design has launched an online interactive design aid

The interactive toolkit is aimed at aiding developers, architects and planners designing commercial buildings to ‘design out crime’ during the early design stages.

Hampshire-based practice Re-Format have been involved in the creation of the guide which works within a fictional 3D neighbourhood containing both residential and commercial properties.

The toolkit details the current standards required by Secured by Design and highlights what decisions will need to be taken to reduce the risks of crime and anti-social behaviour in communal spaces, use of lighting, access and landscaping.

There are now toolkits available for both residential and commercial development, and one for schools is due to be launched in the next year.
