Architect’s choices

Dartmouth Square was an essay in materials and performance, involving extensive research into materials and processes. Carefully selected materials include American oak for open-tread stairs, Douglas fir flooring, bronze cladding and off-white concrete. An immediate challenge was the clients’ desire for exposed concrete on a limited budget. With a tight budget, you have only one chance to get this right. The contractor had neither previously worked in concrete to this specification, nor with our preferred sustainable mix. A particular challenge was achieving this finish on slender 6m-long side walls so they were precast in one piece before being lifted into place and completed.
