A selection of the products used in Henley Halebrown Rorrison’s Buckland Court

Architect’s choices

Our work followed the Decent Homes Programme (new kitchens and sanitaryware, central heating and improved thermal performance). Outwardly this meant UPVC windows and boiler flues projecting from whitewashed plywood boxes so, for each careful material decision we made, the local authority team diminished the original. Nevertheless, the scheme reveals the estate’s latent morphological order and qualities of its robust aesthetic. We hope these modest changes are reflected in the residents’ perceptions of where they live.

Pre-cast concrete

Concrete from Prégaia was used for the concrete benches and planters

Corten

From Skytech, Corten was selected for the entrance gates, its earthy variable colour providing a tough but rich textural addendum to this Brutalist building. It has been fret cut for decoration

Cement-bonded particleboard

Cement board lines the soffits over the passageways that lead from each entrance into the garden, completing the simple tube of space between the two realms. Although manufactured, it is more material than product

Brick

Ibstock Tradesman Sandfaced brick

Hard binding gravel

This IMAG Golden Gravel has an informality and fluidity (without the need for joints) that is consistent with the geometry of the inner courtyard landscape. It is used for the organically shaped paths and hard landscape spaces

Screen-printed aluminium panel

From Skytech, these panels were used to make entrance doors and screens. Smooth ornamental surfaces contrast with the Corten gates’ mass

Stone sett paving

These Palladio Stone beige grey granite setts make up the primary surface to each entrance forecourt. Their scale and texture is pictorially strong but indicates, next to smooth paving, that these areas are not to be walked on. This naturally directs pedestrians, defines thresholds and aids privacy for dwellings near to the original entrances

Tile

The original tiles were used to face the wall adjacent to the Buckland Street entrance

Concrete flag paving

Laid ‘stretcher bond’, these smooth 600mm x 400mm Prestige slabs denote accessible pedestrian routes within wider expanses of stone setts. The paving exhibits a rich surface of exposed aggregate

Steel fence

Orsogril Steropesi is an economic fencing product that was chosen for its fine grain
