Marley Eternit cladding best in class

A £4.5m extension at Rye Oak School in London has used cladding from Marley Eternit’s Natura range to create high performance rear ventilated cladding system.

The state-of-the-art new building features classrooms, meeting rooms and community facilities, and is joined on to the older part of the school via a link corridor.

The thermal efficiency of the rear ventilated cladding system helped to contribute towards the development achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.

Ivory coloured panels, which are part of the Natura range, were specified by Eger Architects and fitted by Buxton Building Contractors. The panels were selected primarily for their durable rainscreen qualities and aesthetic and contemporary appearance.

The panels have a pure, through-coloured core and have a Class 0 fire performance. They are low maintenance and resistant to insects, mould growth and fungi, giving them a life expectancy of at least 50 years.

Celina Dix Hamilton, Partner at Eger Architects, explained: “We decided to use cladding from the Natura range because it is a multi-functional solution that has excellent weather resistance. It can also be used as part of a system to create a thermally efficient rear ventilated cladding system. The panels are also unique in appearance and have helped create a beautifully textured look to the building that few other materials can match.”

The fibre cement panels were fixed to battens on the composite timber structure using stainless steel screws. The screw heads were then painted the same colour as the cladding to help them blend in with the Ivory coloured panels.

Rigid polyurethane (PUR) insulation was used to infill the timber frame structure ensuring the building met the demanding U-values required on this project.

Marley Eternit’s range of fibre cement cladding is used as a durable and cost effective solution for a range of buildings, including schools, hospitals, apartments and homes.
