Innovative Dorma Swing Door Operator Finds Room At High Tech London Hotel

For the conversion of two Grade II listed Georgian buildings into the state-of-the-art Eccleston Square Hotel, designer Woods Bagot has set a benchmark in luxury and high tech design for this 39 room boutique hotel with in-room technology that includes bathroom mirrors with integrated TV’s, 3D televisions, three shower types per room, electronically operated curtains and a virtual concierge service.  

 Main contractor Urban Fabrik were required to create the right first impression with the entrance door, bringing together the historic façade with a timeless interior to create an elegant fusion of old meets new whilst meeting the requirements of Approved Document M.  As part of this, the choice of door control not only had to provide safe, secure and reliable access but also had to be slimline and unobtrusive, so that nothing was visible from the outside.

To meet these requirements, DORMA supplied its ED 250A, an automatic electromechanical swing door operator with DORMA’s revolutionary Wind Load Control.  Even under strong wind conditions the ED 250A intelligently recognises and compensates wind loads of up to 150 N, generating double the closing force of similar automatic swing door operators.

Traditional swing doors fitted with electrohydraulic operators cannot respond to changing weather conditions as closing forces are dependent on set spring force adjustments. This leads to the loss of heated internal air, unauthorised entry and unpredictable driving speeds. With DORMA’s ED 100 and ED 250, these issues are resolved, and their slender design uses almost 40% less material, when compared to DORMA’s previous generations of electrohydraulic door operators. By combining the lightweight module with integrated wind-load control system, this helps to reduce unnecessary CO2emissions in the shipping of goods, as well as the reduction of air lost from the building.

Specifiers need to simply select the suitable version according to prevailing door-leaf width and weight.  While the DORMA ED 100 is suitable for doors with a weight of up to 100 kg and a door width of up to 1,100 mm, the ED 250 is designed for doors with a width of up to 1,600 mm and a door weight of up to 250 kg. Both operators may be installed as push-version with standard arm and as pull-version with slide channel.

With the DORMA ED 250 swing door operator now installed, DORMA has provided reliable and efficient access and ensured the landmark Eccleston Square Hotel will welcome guests for years to come.
