GKD - Metal mesh canopy for a concert hall
More than 200 concerts and an audience of over 220.000 annually make the Tonhalle the most prominent concert hall in Düsseldorf. The exceptional architecture of the former planetarium, which was built on the banks of the river Rhine in 1926, imposed major challenges on the equipment and design of its concert halls.
High acoustic as well as optic demands had to be equally satisfied. The Düsseldorf based architecture office HPP Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner KG, which was assigned with the implementation of the concert halls, therefore chose metal mesh by GKD-Gebr. Kufferath AG for the ceiling design of the so called Hentrich-hall of the Tonhalle. A customized design of the mesh type PC-Omega 1540 made of stainless steel and Bronze came into use to satisfy the functional as well as the aesthetic demands. A total of 110 square metal mesh elements with a size of 1,23 x 1,23 metres form the concert hall. The blue background lighting of the ceiling design gives the mesh the character of a modern firmament interpretation.
