High transparency, short ways and direct communication between the departments were the architectural requirements for the new building of the technology centre IFE (TCI) in Kematen/Ybbs, Austria.
The ambition was to construct a modern office and research building with an appealing and inspirational atmosphere for the 245 employees working in research, development and prototype construction of the worldwide leading producer of automatic door systems for rail vehicles.
For the façade design of the two storied building which was constructed in record time a material was needed that lends the TCI not only a characteristic face but also serves as a sunscreen and offers energetic advantages. For the striking appearance the Hofmeister Group architects chose white coated stainless steel mesh type Omega 1520 by GKD – Gebr. Kufferath AG for the surrounding façade.
On 2.300m² the architectural mesh was applied in elements of up to 8m width. The mesh is deflected horizontally at the top and bottom. At the top the assembly is done with eyebolts and springs. At the bottom the mesh is fixed with the Fusiomesh technology by means of a two-component adhesive between the stainless steel profiles. The white metal mesh façade lends the TCI a striking face, which conveys the openness and transparency of the research building to the outside.
