Ecophon: Walton High School, Milton Keynes

An acoustic solution from Saint-Gobain Ecophon has helped transform the cafeteria and mezzanine in Walton High School, benefitting both pupils and students.

As part of a wider refurbishment, some 65 of Ecophon Solo™ circular acoustic ceiling rafts were used to help combat the high levels of background noise that can be associated with open plan areas, particularly those with lots of hard surfaces such as cafeterias. Different sized circular rafts which are suspended by wires from the ceiling helped to create an eye-catching finish.

Covering a total of 175m², the cafeteria and mezzanine areas can accommodate up to 150 to 200 pupils at any one time. With both acting as bustling meeting places, the potential for distracting background noise was high.

Ecophon worked closely with architects Morton Wykes Kramer Associates to come up with a design that not only looked the part but that also performed acoustically. The Solo rafts offer class A sound absorption but also allow architects to create visually stunning spaces thanks to the huge number of shapes and colours that are available.

A previously untreated area, the school is very pleased with the difference it has made. Conversations are now much easier to hear and the whole area is a much more pleasant and calmer place to be.
