Ecophon - On board with good acoustics

Passengers travelling through a brand new ferry terminal in Scotland are now benefitting from an acoustic solution from Ecophon, part of leading international materials company Saint-Gobain.

Cairnryan Ferry Port provides a high speed link from Scotland to Northern Ireland and was officially opened last Autumn by Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond. Within the ferry terminal building, 1,500 sq m of Ecophon’s Focus E, Gedina and Advantage acoustic ceiling tiles have been installed by Coyle Suspended Ceilings to help reduce reverberation times.

Alan Crampton, Ecophon’s regional manager for Ireland and Scotland, says: ‘We worked very closely with Hobart Heron Architects to come up with a design that not only offered a suitable acoustic solution, but was also cost effective. As a building with high ceilings and lots of hard surfaces, it was essential the acoustic treatment helped to lower reverberation times, creating a quieter and more relaxing area for people passing through.’

Brian Gordon, director at Heron Hobart Architects, comments: ‘As well as considering the impact on passengers, there are a number of offices located on the first floor of the terminal building where meetings take place. We wanted to ensure that background noise was kept to a minimum.

‘Having worked with Ecophon on previous projects, we knew how effective their ceiling tiles would be while also meeting design and aesthetic requirements. The client is extremely pleased with the result.’

Both Ecophon and Heron Hobart were also involved in the construction of the ferry terminal on the Belfast side.
