Class act from Marley contract services at Paisley Grammar

Marley Contract Services has recently completed the prestigious refurbishment of Paisley Grammar School on behalf of Renfrewshire Council.

Marley Contract Services is Scotland’s leading pitched roofing contractor, carrying out work on both new and existing projects.

The refurbishment was carried out on the pitched slate roof of the main building (Grade B listed), which was originally built in 1895.

Marley Contract Services provided complete project management, including all health and safety aspects, on behalf of Renfrewshire Council. The company carried out a thorough risk assessment before work commenced on site as part of its established Safety Management System.

The work on site included removing and inspecting the original Welsh slates.  Those in good condition were re-used on the outward facing roof pitch to retain the listed building’s original appearance. New Welsh slate was then used on the inward facing pitches to replace those in poor condition.

Re-roofing the building also involved Marley Contract Services replacing over 100 specialist roof lights, refurbishing dormer windows, re-fitting cast iron and aluminium guttering, along with all lead work and remedial works to flat roofed areas.

Safety was a key priority for the client. The school building was in full use throughout the contract and this required special scaffolding and detailed traffic management arrangements to ensure that all school users were kept safe at all times. The central hall was fully scaffolded internally to a 4-storey height to allow work to be carried out to the rooflights. The full hall perimeter was also fenced off and netted to isolate the working area from the school. The project was carried out on a phased basis and classrooms handed back as soon as possible to minimize inconvenience in the busy school environment. Marley Contract Services was able to meet the project brief and completed the project on time and on budget with full co-operation from the Client’s Project team, as well as the school staff.

“This was an extremely complex project that required high levels of workmanship, strict adherence to health and safety procedures and considerable logistical challenges,” said Jim Forsyth Director and General Manager of Marley Contract Services. “It presented several technical challenges, but we were able to work within listed building requirements to deliver a visually sympathetic refurbishment for the school. I am proud of our team who carried out this interesting project”

Past pupils of Paisley Grammar include David Tennant, who until recently played Doctor Who, and Andrew Neil, Journalist.

“We are delighted with our new roof as it makes the classrooms feel much warmer,” said Mrs Caroline Amos, Head Teacher at Paisley Grammar School. “The refurbishment has helped create a modern teaching facility that will provide future generations of school children with a great place to learn.”
