The new RNLI Lifeboat Station at The Lizard is protected by a curved skin of Nordic Standard copper from Aurubis Architectural to withstand the aggressive coastal environment of its unique location on England’s most southerly point.
The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. The new building follows a previous design, also by PBWC Architects, in Padstow and is a direct response to the technical demands of a new RNLI ‘fast slipway’ lifeboat. It aims at maximising roof area and minimising penetrations to ensure a robust, weather-tight finish. The selection of metal roofing was a logical progression from the development of the distinctive, wave-like, curved form.
PBWC project architect Cian Spowart commented: “After the Padstow project, we reviewed the roofing material and system for The Lizard lifeboat station. Here, copper was selected for its durability and capability of withstanding the aggressive coastal environment, including the possibility of debris being thrown up from the sea. In addition, the aesthetic choice of copper over other metal roofing was driven by its characteristic weathering over time to give a rich green patina complementing the aqua blue hues of the local coastline.”
The Nordic Standard copper was supplied by Aurubis Architectural, part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler. The copper will continue to develop a natural green patina, taking on a blue hue in this exposed coastal location.
In addition to Nordic Standard, other Aurubis Architectural surfaces include Nordic Green and Nordic Blue factory-applied patinas - developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper gives either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment.
